The Ultimate Guide to Sherwin-Williams Exterior Paints & Stains

Whether you’re refreshing siding, painting trim or protecting wood features like decks and fences, choosing the right exterior coating makes a big difference in durability and curb appeal. Sherwin-Williams makes a wide range of exterior paints and stains built for weather resistance, color retention and specific surfaces.

Exterior paints: protection and beauty

Exterior paints form a protective, colored film on siding, stucco, brick and trim. Sherwin-Williams’ exterior lineup includes professional-grade acrylic latex products made to resist cracking, peeling, fading and mildew, which matters in the heat and humidity of the Southeast.

Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex

Sherwin-Williams’ top-tier exterior paint, with excellent color retention, durability and washability. A strong choice for homeowners who want premium performance and long life on siding and trim.

Duration Exterior Acrylic Latex

Known for durability and adhesion, and often able to cover in fewer coats on repaints. A great fit for homes where long life matters. Duration is one of the paints we use most; it’s what we used on the house during our Magnolia Station repaint in Lula.

Resilience Exterior Acrylic Latex

Balances premium performance with early moisture resistance, which helps when weather changes quickly.

SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex

A reliable option with very good application and hiding. A common choice for repaints where value and performance both matter, and another paint we use regularly.

A-100 Exterior Acrylic Latex

A trusted, value-oriented exterior paint that still gives solid protection and color hold.

Retail paint-and-primer lines

Sherwin-Williams also makes HGTV Home paint-and-primer products sold through retail stores, popular with do-it-yourselfers. For professional repaints, we use contractor lines like Duration and SuperPaint and list the exact products in your proposal.

Metal: gutters, doors and railings

Metal needs a coating made to stick to it. Sherwin-Williams DTM (direct-to-metal) products are designed for that; we used Sherwin-Williams DTM on the gutters in Lula, and on commercial roll-up doors we use a bonding primer with Pro Industrial DTM. See our commercial painting page.

Stains: for wood that shows its grain

Paint covers a surface completely, while stain soaks into wood to protect it and show its texture. Sherwin-Williams wood stains for decks, fences and siding range from transparent (natural grain) to semi-transparent and semi-solid:

  • Transparent stains show off natural wood while shielding it from moisture and UV.
  • Semi-transparent stains balance color and grain.
  • Semi-solid stains give more color and hide imperfections.

On most decks and fences we use Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck oil-based semi-solid stain. More on that on our deck and fence staining page.

How to choose: matching product to project

Choose paint when

  • You want a solid, uniform color

Choose stain when

  • The surface is wood and you want to keep or enhance the grain
  • You’re doing decks, fences, pergolas or wood siding
  • You prefer a natural, rich wood look
